Intravenous Anesthesia and Sedation
- Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 6 to 8 hours prior to surgery. However, it is important that you take any regular medications (high blood pressure, antibiotics, etc.) or any pre-medication prescription that we have provided, using only a small sip of water.
- For morning appointments, skip breakfast.
- Take any regular medications with only enough water to get the pill down.
- You MUST have someone you know and trust drive you home.
- Minors (under 18 years of age) must have a parent or legal guardian present. If a parent is unable to accompany the patient, arrangements must be made to sign consent form(s) in office prior to surgery.
- Wear loose comfortable clothing with short sleeves. Please do not wear high heeled shoes.
- You may rub your eyes when waking from anesthesia. If you wear contacts, we advise you to remove them at home and bring your glasses with you.
- Should you develop a sore throat, cold, cough, flu or temperature, please call our office to reschedule surgery.
- We encourage you not to wear makeup or nail polish on index fingers, so that we may better observe your true skin color. Please leave jewelry, including mouth piercings, at home.
- Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. DO NOT DRIVE FOR 24 HOURS. Do not operate power tools, machinery, etc., for 24 hours after surgery.
Smoking is detrimental to healing. If possible, please do not smoke for one week before and one week after surgery.
Our goal is to provide you with a safe, pleasant and effective anesthetic. In order to do this it is imperative that we have your full cooperation. Please feel free to ask or call about any questions concerning your surgery or anesthetic.
